Sleep Is No Sanctuary: Ben Bosteter’s “Pavor Nocturnus” Turns a Simple Night Into Psychological Horror

Sleep is supposed to be our safest refuge. In Pavor Nocturnus, it becomes something far more unsettling.

Directed by Las Vegas filmmaker Ben Bosteter, this psychological horror short follows Kyle, an exhausted man whose ordinary bedtime routine is interrupted by an uninvited guest. What unfolds is a haunting exploration of isolation, fear, and the horrors that often exist within ourselves rather than the world around us.

Originally conceived as a camera exercise, the project evolved into something deeply personal for Bosteter. Drawing inspiration from filmmakers like Kiyoshi Kurosawa, David Cronenberg, and David Lynch, Pavor Nocturnus embraces atmosphere over jump scares, allowing its striking imagery and immersive sound design to build a lingering sense of dread.

That approach has already earned recognition, with the film receiving Best Sound Design at the Athens International Film Festival.

The short stars Kyle Acosta alongside Scott See and Justene Jurado, whose unsettling performances blur the line between dream and nightmare. Shot on the Sony FX30 and finished in 4K DCP, the film is another example of the bold, creative work coming out of Las Vegas’ independent film community.

As Ben continues developing both a feature film and another short, Pavor Nocturnus offers an exciting glimpse into a filmmaker committed to crafting atmospheric horror that stays with audiences long after the screen goes dark.
