❗️Europe is exploring technology that could make future cars electronically stop drivers from speeding.

Since July 2024, every new car sold in the EU has already been required to include Intelligent Speed Assistance, which uses cameras, GPS and digital maps to detect the local speed limit.

Current ISA systems can warn the driver, add resistance to the accelerator or gently reduce speed, but they can still be overridden or temporarily disabled.

The European Commission is now reportedly discussing a stronger version that could use GPS, 5G positioning and onboard cameras to automatically reduce engine power when a car exceeds the detected limit.

A possible 2030 introduction has been mentioned, but no law, technical standard or official rollout date has been approved, and the Commission says the idea remains purely exploratory.

Accuracy is the biggest concern, as testing by Thatcham Research found some production systems displayed the wrong limit during approximately one in four speed-limit changes.

Cars even showed impossible public-road limits such as 5, 10, 15 and 100 mph, which could become a serious problem if the system were given greater control over acceleration.
