This #MuseumMonday we are taking a closer look at a late nineteenth century photograph that offers a rare glimpse of early South Florida as a shared landscape. Settler John A. Addison is pictured alongside Seminoles at a site once called the “Hunting Grounds,” land that forms part of today’s Deering Estate. Few surviving images capture this kind of everyday proximity between non-Native settlers and Indigenous people.

Historical accounts from the period describe Seminole families regularly traveling through and camping near the Addison homestead, using cleared hammock land for temporary camps, cooking, food preparation, and domestic work. These activities reflect long standing seasonal movement and subsistence practices that were well established before settlers arrived.

A contemporary firsthand source published in 1891 in Frank Leslie’s Popular Monthly records Addison recalling the presence of Seminole travelers in the region. He described seeing fifty canoes gathered at the Brickell trading post, all on their way to the Green Corn Dance, an important annual celebration of spiritual renewal. Although his words reflect a settler perspective, they offer a rare period account of Seminole movement and cultural continuity.

To learn more, visit the Historic Richmond Cottage at the Deering Estate, open daily from 10 AM to 4 PM.

We are proud to be a Blue Star Museum. Active military personnel and their families can visit Deering Estate for free through September 7 (Labor Day). We appreciate your service and look forward to hosting you.
