When a club sells an academy product and recognises it as pure profit, there will be a moment of satisfaction and most likely relief, followed by a thought of "I hope he doesn’t go on to be a world beater."

Why relief? Well, in a paradoxical world of financial compliance and an obsession with spending money, the sale of academy products can get you off the hook.

That is, until that academy player becomes a superstar at their new club and your fire sale of a talent you developed from 8 years old to pay for 3 unproven 21 year old internationals with an attractive set of stats bites you in the a**.

Newcastle will be feeling the full pain of a deal that, at the time, may have allowed them to recognise £35m in pure profit, but in just a few short years has cost them a whole lot of millions more.

Not to mention the on-field value they have missed out on in letting him leave in the first place!

So what does this all mean for Newcastle and what can clubs learn from this situation?
