Operation Babylift was launched in April 1975 during the final weeks of the Vietnam War as North Vietnamese forces closed in on Saigon.

The mission sought to evacuate thousands of Vietnamese children, many of whom were living in orphanages and were slated for adoption by families in the United States, Canada, Australia, and several European countries.

In total, more than 3,000 children were flown to the United States, with thousands more taken in by other nations over the following weeks.

The operation remains one of the most emotionally charged humanitarian efforts of the war. Supporters viewed it as a lifesaving rescue for children facing an uncertain future amid the collapse of South Vietnam. Critics, however, have argued that not every child was truly an orphan. In the confusion of the war’s final days, records were incomplete, and some children may have been separated from living relatives who were never located. Decades later, a number of adoptees have searched for and, in some cases, reunited with their biological families.

The image captures a remarkable scene: infants secured in makeshift bassinets placed across the seats of a commercial airliner. It reflects both the urgency of the evacuation and the extraordinary logistical effort required to move hundreds of vulnerable children out of a war zone.

Added fact:

The first Operation Babylift flight ended in tragedy when a U.S. Air Force C-5A Galaxy crashed shortly after takeoff from Saigon on April 4, 1975. Of the 328 people aboard, 138 were killed, including 78 children. Despite the disaster, evacuation flights resumed within days and continued until the fall of Saigon on April 30, 1975.
