Justin Fields had the NFL in a chokehold for a minute. Out of Ohio State, he checked every box for a modern franchise quarterback. He began his college career at Georgia behind Jake Fromm, sharing a roster with D’Andre Swift, Mecole Hardman, Riley Ridley, James Cook, and other Bulldogs before transferring to Ohio State. There, Fields became one of college football’s best QBs, throwing to Chris Olave, Garrett Wilson, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, and Marvin Harrison Jr., handing off to Trey Sermon and Master Teague while leading the Buckeyes to the College Football Playoff and finishing as a Heisman Trophy finalist. When the Chicago Bears drafted him in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft, expectations were sky-high. The arm talent, speed, size, toughness, and ability to launch deep balls or turn broken plays into touchdowns made it feel like Chicago had finally found its franchise QB.

His 2022 season is one of the best rushing seasons ever by a quarterback: 1,143 rushing yards, 8 rushing TDs, and a 178-yard game against the Miami Dolphins that looked straight out of Madden. Even with teammates like Darnell Mooney, Cole Kmet, David Montgomery, Khalil Herbert, DJ Moore, Roschon Johnson, Keenan Allen, Rome Odunze, Khalil Mack, and later Montez Sweat, Fields spent much of his time battling an inconsistent offensive line and constant coaching changes. His career took him to the Pittsburgh Steelers, sharing the QB room with Russell Wilson while playing with T.J. Watt, Cameron Heyward, Minkah Fitzpatrick, George Pickens, Najee Harris, Pat Freiermuth, and Joey Porter Jr. The New York Jets gave him another chance with a new coaching staff and roster hoping to unlock the star many believed he’d become, but it didn’t work out there either.

The numbers are still impressive: over 9,000 passing yards, 52 passing touchdowns, nearly 2,900 rushing yards, and 23 rushing touchdowns despite everything he’s faced. That’s why NFL fans still wonder what could’ve been. Justin Fields looked like the future of the NFL at quarterback, and maybe he’ll still find a way to turn his career around.
