Fresno Chaffee Zoo is celebrating a 4th of July surprise: two new African lion cubs.
The zoo announced on Thursday that the mother Zamaya, gave birth to her second litter of cubs on Saturday, July 4.
Zamaya and her two cubs are resting and bonding behind the scenes while they continue to be monitored by the zoo’s animal care and veterinary teams.
The zoo said this is the second litter born to Zamaya and Chisulo, a male African lion at Fresno Chaffee Zoo.
Taraj and Asali, born in 2024, were the pair’s first litter and remain at the zoo.

This comes just a week after the zoo announced the birth of an endangered baby siamang, and officials say both mother and infant are doing well.
The Fresno Chaffee Zoo announced that Safiya, a 16-year-old siamang, gave birth to a female baby on Thursday, June 11.
The two have started bonding in the habitat with the other siamangs and orangutans, beginning to establish a normal daily routine with the rest of the troop.
The baby is the third infant born to Safiya and a male siamang named Noah.
Guests can most likely expect to see the pair on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

And in more animal news in the Central Valley, three runaway goats briefly brought traffic to a halt on State Route 198 near Road 182 after wandering into the roadway.
CHP says officers responded after the goats were seen darting in and out of traffic lanes, creating a hazard for motorists.
The animals were safely rounded up without injuries to the goats or drivers and were turned over to Animal Control to help locate their owner.
CHP reminds drivers who encounter animals on the road to slow down, avoid sudden swerves when possible, and report the hazard to law enforcement.
