So I was thinking about something this morning as I was going through old pictures from my days in high school. There's a kid somewhere awake at 2am in the middle of summer, and already having anxiety before school even starts. He/she is thinking about the new schedules, new people, new teachers, and most importantly, their grades already.

As they are feeling anxious, their parent walks by and says what they think will help. "You've got a month left before school; try to relax." But unfortunately, anxiety doesn't run on a calendar, and it waits for no one. It shows up whenever it shows up, which could be a month early or the night before.

Here are a couple of ways anxiety tends to show up for students:

1. Insomnia: Keeping the student up at night, thinking about the upcoming year

2. Irritability over small things: This is because the real pressure they are experiencing has nowhere else to go

3. Physical complaints with no clear cause: stomachaches, headaches, cramps, dehydration, and so much more.

What the research and stats say:
83% of teens say academic pressure is their biggest daily stressor. That kind of pressure doesn't wait for any specific day to start and begins to run in the background consistently.

Ask Questions:
Don't fight the anxiety; talk through it, ask questions, and then name exactly what it is. Is it about the schedule, a specific class, a teacher, meeting new people? Once you know, then you can do something about it now, while there's still time.

If it's the schedule, walk the campus before day one. If it's the social part, text someone who's already going. These are small moves and questions that will help you bring things to the surface and come up with a plan to make life easier.

What's the one thing you're already a little anxious about for this school year as a student, a parent, or a teacher?
