Five and a half years ago, the last thing on my mind was writing another book.

When your child dies, the future disappears. People tell you to take it one day at a time, but even that feels impossible. 

I was just wondering how I was supposed to survive the next five minutes…and how I was supposed to take my next breath when the one before it hurt so much.

If someone had told me then that one day I would write a book about what grief taught me... that it would be published by Maria Shriver's imprint openfieldbooks that it would carry the wisdom my son left behind... that it would find its way into the hands of people who needed hope and guidance that would change everything ... I wouldn't have believed them.

It wasn’t that I didn't believe in healing.

It was because I couldn't imagine ever feeling alive again.

And yet, here we are. And I am so grateful and excited. 

Crying Out Loud is the book I desperately needed when the ground disappeared beneath me. It's everything I've learned as a therapist, everything I've lived as a grieving mother, and everything Sammy continues to teach me about love, loss, and what becomes possible when we stop trying to outrun our grief and learn how to move with it.

This book isn't about leaving your person behind.

It's about discovering that grief can become a doorway. That love doesn't end. That even after the unimaginable, life can slowly expand around the pain until one day you realize you're breathing again. Laughing again. Loving again. Living again.
