દક્ષિણ અમેરિકાના પેરુ દેશમાં ૫.૫ ની તીવ્રતાના ભયાનક ભૂકંપના કારણે ભારે તબાહી મચી ગઈ છે. આ કાળજું કંપાવનારી કુદરતી આપત્તિમાં પાંચ લોકોના કરૂણ મોત નીપજ્યા છે, જ્યારે વીસથી વધુ લોકો ગંભીર રીતે ઈજાગ્રસ્ત થયા છે. ભૂકંપના આ તીવ્ર આંચકાના કારણે ત્રણસોથી વધુ લોકો પોતાના ઘર ગુમાવીને બેઘર બની ગયા છે. વિસ્ફોટક આંચકાને લીધે વિસ્તારમાં આવેલા કાચા બાંધકામો અને નબળા મકાનો પત્તાના મહેલની જેમ વિખેરાઈ ગયા હતા અને ચારેય તરફ કાટમાળના ઢગલા ખડકાઈ ગયા હતા. ઘટનાને પગલે સ્થાનિક પ્રશાસન દ્વારા અસરગ્રસ્ત વિસ્તારોમાં તાત્કાલિક ધોરણે રાહત અને બચાવ કામગીરી શરૂ કરી દેવામાં આવી છે.
