Your baby’s brain is a hard drive, and you have about five years to build it. Everything after that is more like a software update.

That single idea from Dr. Dana Suskind rewired how I think about raising kids in the age of AI. Dana is a pediatric cochlear implant surgeon (yes, one of the very few people I would let open up my head), and her new book, Human Raised, is the smartest thing I have read on children and technology.

A few things that stuck with me:
-It was never about Harvard. In the age of AI, the skills that matter are the human ones a machine cannot fake: connection, curiosity, adaptability, and judgment.
-A child hears roughly 30 million words in their first three years, and those words build the ability to connect, not just a vocabulary. No gadget can shortcut that.
-Tech quietly sets three traps for parents: the default trap, the pressure trap, and the design trap. About 90 percent of us never change the autoplay, and that is not an accident.
-Friction is the feature, not the bug. A frictionless childhood is candy every day, and kids learn to be human through imperfection.
-Her north star is the H.O.P.E. framework: Human connection, Own your imperfections, Protect the early years, Enhance, don’t replace.

The bottom line, and Dana agreed with me on this one: use AI to do the grunt work so you can double down on human connection with your kids.
