Being a Zookeeper and a Guardian of Wild is a multifaceted profession rooted in animal care, conservation, education, and lifelong learning. As the need to protect wildlife and disappearing habitats grows, zoo keepers like those at your Toronto Zoo serve as both skilled animal care professionals and conservation ambassadors. 

Their daily work includes providing care for a wide range of species, which involves cleaning and maintaining habitats and holding areas, preparing diets while ensuring food safety and quality, monitoring animal health and behaviour, administering prescribed medications, assisting with veterinary exams and quarantine; supporting positive reinforcement training so animals can participate in their own care, and creating enrichment opportunities that encourage natural behaviours and mental engagement. 

Our Wildlife Care team also help maintain safe buildings, habitats, and perimeter fencing. They support landscaping, exhibit design, and animal introductions; monitor pests and submit pest control requests; and connect guests and members to wildlife through, “Meet the Guardian” Talks, tours, encounters, and other educational programs. 

From birth to passing and every moment in between, your Toronto Zoo’s keepers are deeply involved in the lives and well-being of the animals in our care, often forming lifelong bonds while contributing to the protection and understanding of wildlife conservation.
