Amid growing debate over India's mandatory E20 rollout, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has clarified that motorists who don't want ethanol-blended fuel can simply opt for pure petrol instead but it'll cost them significantly more. While regular E20 petrol contains 20% ethanol and sells around ₹102-110 per litre, unblended petrol like IndianOil's XP100, HPCL's Power100, or BPCL's Speed100 retails at nearly ₹167-170 per litre in metro cities.

The price gap comes down to supply chains and refining. Pure petrol requires a separate, more advanced refining process and its own distribution network, since India relies heavily on imported crude oil for it. Ethanol blending, on the other hand, uses domestically sourced sugarcane and maize, which reduces the country's import dependence and has reportedly saved over ₹1.40 lakh crore in foreign exchange. Gadkari also dismissed viral claims that E20 damages engines as misinformation, noting the government has received no verified complaints and that automakers like Maruti Suzuki continue to offer warranties on E20-compatible vehicles.
