“The Maldives is shark country, and that’s a very good thing.

I’ve dived all over the world and few places put you face to face with this many sharks. Grey reef sharks hold in the current along the channels. Whitetip reef sharks rest on the sand and tuck under ledges. Nurse sharks pile into the cracks, waiting out the day before they hunt at night. On a good channel dive you’re not hoping to spot one shark, you’re watching a dozen cruise past in the blue.

Here’s what most people miss: sharks are a sign of a healthy ocean, not a threat to it. They sit at the top of the food chain, and when they show up in these numbers, the whole reef below them is in balance. Lose the sharks and the entire system starts to unravel.

The move here is a channel dive on an incoming tide. You drop in, hook into the reef edge, and let the show come to you.
