The RUF CTR “Yellowbird” became
a supercar icon in the late 1980s,
redefining speed and engineering.
Built on a lightweight Porsche 911
Carrera chassis delivered “body in
white” from Porsche, it was rebuilt
from the ground up with a bespoke
3.4-liter twin-turbo flat-six producing
around 463 HP and 408 lb-ft of
torque. Wrapped in lightweight
aluminum panels and paired with a
custom six-speed gearbox, the
Yellowbird stormed to 213 mph in
1987, making it the world’s fastest
production car. Outpacing Ferrari,
Lamborghini, and even Porsche’s
own 959, it also offered reliability and
everyday usability. Only 29 were built
from 1987-1996, each now a legend.

In 1990, one devoted Japanese RUF
collector, working through importer
Ishida Engineering, proposed an
unprecedented idea: a slantnose, or
“Flachbau,” version of the
Yellowbird. No CTR had ever worn
this distinctive front end, and RUF’s
engineers were initially skeptical.
The design posed serious
challenges, eliminating space for
standard oil coolers, requiring a
complete relocation of the
headlamp motors, and risking
aerodynamic instability at speeds
over 185 mph. Yet, driven by the
customer’s persistence and RUF’s
reputation for engineering
excellence, the project ultimately
moved forward developing a one off RUF CTR.
