I spy… something dark 🔎

In this photo snapped by NASAHubble, this ghostly cloud appears to have a dark ring around the central galaxy cluster. That ring is evidence of dark matter, the invisible glue that holds the universe together.

Visible matter, or the stuff we can see, makes up only 5% of the universe. Dark matter makes up over five times as much of the universe, but we can’t see it because it doesn’t emit, reflect, or absorb any light. However, dark matter interacts with ordinary visible matter through gravity, so that’s how scientists detect it.

The exact nature of this abundant, invisible substance is still unknown, but our soon-to-launch Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope aims to shed light on the subject. With a field of view over 100 times that of NASAHubble’s, Roman’s enormous perspective will measure the distribution of both visible and dark matter in hundreds of millions of galaxies, helping scientists understand how dark matter has evolved in the universe.
