#DovePartner✨ What I remember most about this photo is being scared to take it. I was so sad because at the tender age of 5 years old, I believed that my hair was ugly. The media and mean kids at school had forced that agenda into my subconscious at such a young age, and I remember being terrified. Terrified that the world would see me, and not see enough. At five years old, I couldn’t see my own beauty. My own crown. I didn’t understand the Power it held. The respect it demanded. ✨

This year, I'm excited to celebrate International Day of the Girl on 10/11 with Dove to empower girls and help them grow up to be empowered women. Dove is committed to ending race-based hair discrimination – from stopping racist school grooming policies to building awareness around bullying and microaggressions in schools - and you can help Dove and the Crown Coalition end this injustice together by signing the Crown Act petition.

That same afro is now on the cover of my OWN book, sold all over America. That same kinky hair has been the catalyst for so much deep healing. I had to eradicate my idealization of western and Eurocentric beauty standards to discover the ancestral magic of my own beauty. Of AFRICAN beauty. Our resilience. The magic that is woven into our kinks and coils. The energy that flows through us. Our Hair is ENERGY, a symbol of our connection to LIFE and to the SUN. I love that my hair grows upwards towards the heavens. That It connects me to the divine, and the power of my ancestors who came before me. My coils are my receptors, connecting me to a higher power. Connecting me deeper to myself.
