Christopher Nolan went to ridiculous lengths to turn The Odyssey into a modern cinematic epic 🤯

The entire film was shot using IMAX film cameras, making it the first feature to achieve this. Nolan and cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema used around 2.1 million feet of film and helped IMAX develop a quieter next-generation camera system, allowing more dialogue scenes to be captured in the format.

Instead of relying heavily on green screens, the 91-day shoot travelled across Greece, Morocco, Italy, Iceland, Scotland and the US. The production built a two-and-a-half-acre recreation of Troy, constructed a 115ft Greek warship and filmed cast members aboard real vessels in open water.

For the battle against the giant Laestrygonians, Nolan used forced perspective rather than simply making the actors bigger with CGI. Matt Damon was doubled by 4ft 5in stunt performer Devyn Dalton, making the surrounding performers appear enormous by comparison.

The Cyclops was brought to life using a huge 60ft mechanical contraption, animatronics and a real Greek cave. Nolan also used practical sheep and carefully controlled lighting to make the sequence feel more like horror than conventional fantasy.

A full-sized, 35ft Trojan Horse was built for filming and transported to the Moroccan coast, with more than two dozen performers packed inside while scenes were captured using IMAX cameras. The widely reported 8,000lb figure refers to a later promotional replica built from the film’s original blueprints.

Even the soundtrack avoided a conventional orchestra. Ludwig Göransson used reconstructed ancient instruments including the aulos and lyre, alongside bronze percussion, to create a score inspired by the story’s Bronze Age setting.

Basically, Nolan did not just adapt one of history’s greatest adventures. He physically built as much of it as possible 👏
