Barbie and Oppenheimer both hit cinemas on 21 July 2023, turning two completely different films into one of the biggest cinema events in recent history.⁠

During their opening weekend in the US and Canada, Barbie made $162 million while Oppenheimer brought in $82.4 million. Together, they reportedly accounted for 79% of all tickets sold that weekend, with around 18.5 million people heading to cinemas.⁠

The films went on to earn more than $2.4 billion combined worldwide, proving that audiences really would watch a bright-pink comedy and a three-hour historical drama back-to-back.⁠
