Most meaningful experience in Canada 🇨🇦 

During our trip to Cape Breton, we visited Eskasoni Cultural Journeys, where we joined a guided experience on the Goat Island to learn more about the Mi’kmaq people and their enduring connection to this land.

The Mi’kmaq are the Indigenous people of Mi’kma’ki, their ancestral territory, which includes all of Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, parts of New Brunswick, Québec, and Newfoundland. Unama’ki (Cape Breton Island) is one of the seven traditional districts of Milkmaki and continues to be home to vibrant  Mi’kmaq communities today.

As we walked the trail, our guide shared stories about  Mi’kmaq history, traditions, language, and teachings, along with their deep respect for the land, water, and all living things. We experienced traditional drumming, singing, and dancing-not simply as performances, but as meaningful expressions of culture, identity, and community that have been passed down through generations. It was a privilege to be welcomed into this experience with such warmth and generosity.

As immigrants living in Canada, we believe exploring this country is about more than just visiting beautiful places. It’s also about learning the stories of the people who have cared for these lands since time immemorial. Experiences like this help us better understand Canada’s rich history and appreciate the cultures that continue to shape it today.

If you’re planning a trip to Unama’ki (Cape Breton Island), I highly recommend setting aside time for Eskasoni Cultural Journeys. Go with curiosity, listen with respect, and you’ll leave with a deeper appreciation for Mi’kmaq culture and the living traditions that make this place so special.
