Why are more teams using Lateral Zoom actions?

The action moves side-to-side, forcing defenders to:

Defend multiple angles
Handle continuous actions

Simple action. Complex problems for the defense.

The Value of the Lateral Zoom Handoff

Most coaches know the traditional Zoom action, but the lateral version creates unique advantages that can elevate your offense.

✅ Elite Spacing
By moving the action side-to-side instead of toward the top, both corners stay occupied and the floor remains balanced.

✅ Distorted Defensive Coverages
Help defenders can’t load up to one side of the floor. Rotations become longer, communication becomes harder, and defensive mistakes become more likely.

✅ Creates Advantage Basketball
Even when the defense contains the initial handoff, Lateral Zoom can seamlessly flow into another action—ball screens, slips, second Zooms, flare screens, or reversals.

Run it with a dribble handoff. Run it with a dribble or stationary handoff. Add counters and reads. The same alignment can produce multiple offensive outcomes.

The best offenses don’t use Lateral Zoom as a play—they use it as a framework to create continuous advantages.
