Every molecule shown in this image was individually modeled using real experimental structural data and combined into a single visualization of a eukaryotic cell.

Titled “Cellular Landscape Cross-Section Through a Eukaryotic Cell,” this incredible scientific illustration was created by Evan Ingersoll and Gaël McGill at Digizyme for Cell Signaling Technology. It uses molecular information gathered from techniques such as X-ray crystallography, nuclear magnetic resonance, and cryo-electron microscopy.

These molecular structures were then assembled using Molecular Maya and Autodesk Maya to create a detailed cross-section showing multiple cellular processes, including signal transmission, protein production, and vesicle movement, all happening within the same scene.

Since current imaging technology cannot capture the inside of a living cell at this molecular scale, visualizations like this provide one of the closest ways we have to explore the hidden machinery that makes life possible.
