The U.S. Department of the Treasury and the Bureau of the Fiscal Service announced the successful implementation of a new government-wide payment verification process designed to prevent federal payments from being issued to deceased individuals. The initiative fulfills a key requirement of Executive Order 14249, *Protecting America's Bank Account Against Fraud, Waste, and Abuse.*

According to the Treasury Department, the new verification process has screened more than 885 million federal payments totaling approximately $2.77 trillion. Officials said the system identified more than 4,900 payments, valued at approximately $99 million, that were associated with deceased payees. Those payments were returned to the originating federal agencies for review before any funds were disbursed.

Treasury officials said the effort builds on expanded access to the Social Security Administration's Full Death Master File, allowing the department to more effectively identify deceased payees before payments are issued. Congress made that access permanent in February 2026 with the passage of the Ending Improper Payments to Deceased People Act, which was signed into law by President Trump.

The Treasury Department said it will continue implementing additional payment verification measures required under the executive order to strengthen protections against fraud, waste, and improper payments across the federal government.
