Halfway through swapping wheels on an E46 M3 last fall, my boy calls me mid-torque-wrench and goes "bro just run 18x9.5 square and stop overthinking it." I'd been going back and forth on square vs staggered for weeks — forums saying one thing, Facebook groups saying another, half the builds I liked running setups that shouldn't clear but somehow did.

Here's the thing nobody talks about with E46 M3 fitment: the stock staggered setup (8" front, 9" rear) is genuinely conservative. BMW left room in those fenders. A lot of room. The question isn't whether you can go wider — it's whether you want identical grip front and rear for rotation and tire swaps, or you want that planted rear-biased stance that makes the S54 feel like it's clawing out of corners.

Square 18x9.5 ET35 all around with 265s is the move if you track it, autocross it, or just hate buying two different sets of tires. Rotate freely, even wear, and the fronts finally have enough meat to match what the rear end wants to do. Staggered 18x9 ET30 front / 18x10.5 ET22 rear with 245/275 is the move if you want the look and you're not worried about tire logistics. Both clear with rolled fenders, no pulling needed.

The real secret? Most E46 M3 guys end up buying square after running staggered for two seasons because they're tired of replacing rears every 8,000 miles while the fronts still look fresh. The ones who stick with staggered just accepted the tire bill as a personality trait.

Save this before you order the wrong offsets and learn the hard way that ET45 on a 10.5" wide wheel is a conversation with your fender liner you don't want to have.
