After competing in three sports throughout high school, recent Cambridge graduate Micah Gerlach is focusing on the game he loves most.

The standout wrestler, baseball player and golfer will continue his golf career this fall at Central Community College in Columbus, fulfilling a longtime goal of playing the sport at the collegiate level.

“When you just hit a pure shot, there’s no better feeling than that,” Gerlach said.

The opportunity comes after years of dedication and perseverance. Two years ago, Gerlach underwent UCL surgery before returning to compete in both baseball and golf. Last year, he finished just one stroke shy of the Nebraska Class D state golf championship and again contended near the top this spring.

“You’ve got to put in a lot of time,” Gerlach said. “When people are doing other things, you’ve got to be on the golf course practicing, or on the range, or on the putting green.”

Although golf will be his primary focus in college, Gerlach plans to spend the remainder of the summer competing in golf tournaments while also playing baseball.

“I’ll probably play in a few golf tournaments,” he said. “I’ll be playing baseball too, so just kind of have to counterbalance that.”

Gerlach believes the two sports complement each other, particularly the mental side of competition.

“It just helps you keep calm, stay the course,” he said.

This fall, Gerlach will take the next step in his athletic career, turning a lifelong dream into reality at Central Community College.
