Of course, every child is different, but these were the recommendations we followed:

🤍 Let the baby bring a gift.
When our first son met his little brother, there was a special Lego set waiting for him from the small brother. It immediately created a positive first association.

🤍 Greet the older child first.
When he came into the room, my first focus was on him. Not the baby. Not the photos. Him. He had just experienced a huge change too.

🤍 Don’t hold the baby in your arms during the first meeting.
This was advice we heard from several experts. Instead, let the baby be in a bassinet or next to you so your older child doesn’t feel like they are competing for your arms from the very first second.

🤍 Let them set the pace.
Some children want to cuddle, kiss and help immediately. Others need time to observe from a distance. Both reactions are completely normal.

🤍 Give your older child a role.
A “big brother” or “big sister” job can make them feel included and important — bringing a diaper, choosing an outfit, helping with a blanket.

🤍 Keep reminding them that they are still your baby too.
The arrival of a sibling doesn’t make them any less special. If anything, they need extra reassurance in the beginning.
