Monsoon season is here and these five are the ones locals do on instinct.

Never drive into a flooded wash. It never looks that deep and it always is. Six inches of moving water is enough to knock an adult down and about two feet will carry an SUV. If you go around a barricade on a closed road and end up needing a rescue, Arizona Revised Statute 28-910 lets the responding agency bill you for the response plus up to $2,000. Worth knowing, but the reason to turn around is the drowning, not the invoice.

Never drive into a dust storm. ADOT’s guidance is specific and most people only remember half of it. Exit the highway if you can. If you can’t, pull completely off the paved portion, not the shoulder and not a travel lane. Then turn off every light you have, including your hazards, set the emergency brake, take your foot off the brake pedal and stay buckled until it passes. The lights are the part people get wrong. Drivers behind you in zero visibility will follow taillights straight into your parked car.

Never leave patio furniture out. The outflow wind arrives ahead of the rain and it moves cushions, umbrellas and trash cans like they weigh nothing.

Never stand under a mesquite or palo verde when it kicks up. Shallow roots, heavy canopy, and they come over in one piece.

And never assume a downed power line is dead. Every year storms take poles down across the Valley. Treat every wire on the ground as energized, keep everyone away from it, and call it in.
