Nearly five years after Phoenix Officer Tyler Moldovan was critically injured in the line of duty, the man accused in the attack is now standing trial.

Moldovan had been with the department for just nine months when he and his partner responded to reports of cars doing donuts near 19th Avenue and Camelback Road in December 2021. Prosecutors say he was struck eight times, including once in the head.

He spent months in the hospital and later underwent extensive physical, occupational and speech therapy as part of his recovery.

Essa Williams is accused in the attack. Prosecutors are expected to call Moldovan, responding officers, detectives and forensic experts during the trial, which could last several weeks.

Williams has pleaded not guilty, and the allegations will now be decided in court.
