Why “Garden Shed” is the most important song on ‘Flower Boy’ 🌻👇

Most people hear it as Tyler, the Creator’s “coming out” song, but that’s only part of what it’s really about…

The entire song is built around one metaphor: a garden shed. A place where you store things you don’t want anyone else to see. Tyler uses it to represent the parts of himself he’s spent years hiding, whether that’s his sexuality, his emotions, or simply the fear of being fully understood.

The most telling line is when he raps, “Garden shed for the garçons,” with garçons being French for “boys,” while describing feelings he’s been “guarding” for years. 

But instead of putting a label on himself, Tyler leaves the song open-ended. It’s less about answering questions and more about admitting he’s been carrying something in silence 🤐 

That honesty made Flower Boy such a turning point. Before 2017, Tyler was known for shock value and controversy. After Flower Boy, people began seeing him as one of hip-hop’s most vulnerable songwriters. Garden Shed became the emotional centerpiece of that transformation.

Ironically, one of the album’s biggest viral moments came from a lyric fans got wrong. Many thought Tyler referenced Frank Ocean in the line “Thought it’d be like the Frank…” fueling even more speculation about the song’s meaning. Tyler later clarified he actually said, “Thought it’d be like the phrase… ‘poof,’ gone.”

To this day, fans still look back on this song as one of Tyler’s most vulnerable moments. It didn’t give any clear answers, but that was the point.
