My thoughts on summer tournaments pt. 1

If you’re doing summer tournaments thinking there’s going to be NHL and college scouts in the stands, you’re in it for the wrong reason. You’re the reason youth hockey has gotten to where it is. It always does come down to egos.

Ultimately, I think it’s about the experience, exposure and comraderie. You can play kids in tournaments from different parts of the world and gain exposure. The magic is in the group as a whole, coming together with one shared mission or belief. And because of my recruiting process explained in the video, I’m able to assemble players and families that do connect. They all jive because I knew they would.

For me, I simply try to give my players and families an unforgettable experience. Winning a championship can do that, sure. But I actually pride myself on being able to offer a great experience without a trophy.

Winning is a bonus because winning is really fun. But those who know Heads Up Hockey, know that there’s way more to it than winning and losing. It’s about community, it’s about coming together as one to achieve a certain goal. The players connect, the parents connect, even the siblings of players connect. That’s what this sport does best, it unites us. It allows us to create relationships and memories.

One of the coolest things about HUH for me is when I can see kids become best friends in the span of 72 hours. Those friendships will last a lifetime. They’ll see each other through their careers and remember the time they shared at HUH.

Hockey turned me into the person I am today.

These kids are talented, but they’re also great kids from great parents. These are the people I want to keep giving opportunities to play for me.

One bad apple can ruin it for the chemistry of a team, this is where a coach sometimes has to make harsh decisions. Be coachable, be a pleasure to work with. It will go a long way.
