I genuinely loved living in Vancouver. It’s one of the most beautiful cities in the world. But after 13 years there I moved back to Calgary and there were things that surprised me.

First is, the space. I pulled up to houses here and I could not believe what you get for the money. Like actual square footage, a garage, a backyard. After years of Vancouver pricing that genuinely felt unreal to me.

Second is, the sun. I forgot how sunny Calgary actually is. Vancouver is gorgeous but the grey winters are real. I got back here in the spring and I was like oh right, this is what 300 plus days of sunshine feels like.

Third is, the mountains are still right there. We are an hour from Banff. An hour. I forgot that was just a normal Saturday for people who live here.

Fourth is, how fast this city is growing. I came back expecting the Calgary I left and it is not that. The restaurants, the neighbourhoods, the new builds going up everywhere. It genuinely surprised me, a lot of this didn’t exist the last time I was here. 

I’m not saying one city is better than the other. I’m saying if you grew up here or you’re thinking about making the move, it might surprise you too.
