Speaking at the Global Nobel Laureates Assembly on Artificial Intelligence and Nuclear War, at Borgo Laudato Si’, Vatican, was one of the defining moments of my work this year.

The session, “Faith and the Future of Humanity in the Age of AI and Nuclear War,” asked a hard question: can the world’s religious traditions actually shape how this technology develops, or are we just commentators after the fact. 

I used an old metaphor that we encounter at the center of the Magnifica Humanitas Encyclical, to answer to a new problem. Rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem, rather than raising another Tower of Babel, means treating every contributor’s difference as an asset instead of something to standardize away. 

Concretely, that means three groups have to sit at the same table: the stewards, meaning religious leaders and the academic world, the custodians, meaning governments and regulators who can build a legitimate framework, and the builders, so that they are seated alongside a community that is fully engaged rather than consulted after the decisions are made.

There is no single path to AI that is safe, ethical, and responsible. It only happens if every layer of stakeholder is genuinely involved, without being asked to set aside their own moral and ethical principles.
