## Caption

John Chapman, an Airforce combat controller who was killed in action during the Battle of Takur Ghar in Afghanistan, was the first airman since the Vietnam War to receive the Medal of Honor. He also has the distinction of being the only MOH recipient to have their valorous acts recorded, by a CIA predator drone, in his case. On March 4th, 2002, Sergeant Chapman and a team of Navy SEALs took enemy fire while in a Chinook helicopter. Neil Roberts, a Navy SEAL, was thrown from the helicopter and killed. After emergency egress, the helicopter landed over 4 miles from where Roberts had landed. Chapman coordinated close air support from an AC-130 to cover the air crew and team and search for Roberts. Upon locating Roberts, Chapman and his team volunteered to rescue or recover him from an enemy stronghold.

Upon approaching the initial enemy fighting position, Chapman neutralized two enemy combatants before the team came under intense fire where Chapman sustained numerous wounds. While he was believed to be killed at the second position, it became understood that he was only temporarily incapacitated, but returned to the fight to kill yet more enemy fighters and allow the SEAL and Army Ranger teams to break contact with enemy combatants and retreat to a defensible position. In his own words, his Navy sea-air-land team leader credits Sergeant Chapman unequivocally with saving the lives of the entire rescue team.

While he was initially awarded the Air Force Cross, it was later upgraded to the Medal of Honor, fourteen years after his death. Recently, his story has been in the news headlines because the National Medal of Honor Museum has stated that Chapman will not have an exhibit for his individual story. We think it only appropriate that his immense bravery and ultimate sacrifice be honored and individually recognized for his actions that day.

Spec Ops Tools will make a donation to the National Medal of Honor Museum to support the exhibition of the moving story of Master Sergeant Chapman and all he gave to defend the lives of his team.
