One of our recent acquisitions, Venus (Rosetta Tharpe)🎼, 2025, by Bahamian-born conceptual artist and MacArthur Award recipient Tavares Strachan⭐️, is now on view in our Arts of Global Africa galleries 🌍

🎶This sonic sculpture features a self-playing adungu (bow harp from Uganda) that Strachan transformed into a symbolic and literal vessel of cultural transmission. Four of the harp’s strings are activated creating a soundscape that evokes the deep ancestral roots of rhythm and melody. 

🎶Venus also pays tribute to Sister Rosetta Tharpe, a trailblazing musician who combined spiritual lyrics with electric guitar. In merging an instrument deeply rooted in African musical traditions with the legacy of an underrecognized African American artist, Strachan highlights the overlooked yet enduring cultural connections that continue to shape global music today✨
