For centuries, death loomed within the very cultural heart and soul of Vienna. It was woven into the city’s art, poetry, music, and architecture. Macabre #MementoMori sculptures can be found throughout the city to this day. 

The Habsburgs, one of Europe’s most powerful royal dynasties, embraced this tradition with funerals unlike any other. After death, many emperors and empresses were divided into three separate burials: their body laid to rest in the Imperial Crypt, their heart sealed inside a silver urn, and their embalmed entrails interred in a different sacred crypt. It’s a fascinating glimpse into the elaborate rituals of a dynasty that shaped Europe for centuries, and one of Vienna’s most unforgettable pieces of history.
