The non-runner’s guide to Hyrox

Here’s the truth:

You still need to run.

Hyrox includes eight kilometers of running, and there is no way to completely replace that with bikes, ergs, or circuits.

But that does not mean every aerobic workout has to be a run.

If you are newer to running, injury-prone, or simply do not enjoy high running volume, you can build a lot of your engine through lower-impact work:

Bike.

Ski Erg.

Rower.

Elliptical.

Long aerobic circuits.

These workouts can improve your cardiovascular fitness without adding the same amount of impact to your legs.

But at least one run each week should look like the race you are training for.

I would make that your Hyrox-style run.

For example:

Run 1,000 meters.

Complete a station or short compromised effort.

Run another 1,000 meters.

Repeat.

This teaches you how to settle back into your pace after a station, which is one of the most important skills in Hyrox.

You can build your aerobic engine in a lot of different ways.

But you still need enough running to prepare your body for the impact, rhythm, and fatigue of race day.

You do not need to become a runner before you start Hyrox.

But to become better at Hyrox, you do need to become better at running.
