I get paid by some of your favorite workout studios to tell them what’s wrong with their business. Turns out being opinionated is a career path.

And you’d be surprised how often it’s NOT the workout.

It’s signing the wrong lease. In boutique fitness, real estate can make or break the entire business. Too much space, too much rent, the wrong neighborhood, bad parking, no foot traffic or a lease that only works financially if every class is packed. The terms being too long. All these things can make or break even the best classes.

It’s getting people in the door but not getting them to come back. You can have a killer launch, great influencers and a packed opening month, but if first-timers aren’t converting and existing clients aren’t staying, you have a very expensive acquisition problem.

It’s not having cult-like instructors. People might try a studio because of the brand, but they come back because they’re obsessed with the person teaching Tuesday at 9am.

It’s relying too heavily on ClassPass. A full room doesn’t necessarily mean a profitable room or a loyal customer base.

It’s having a confusing schedule. Too many modalities, too many class names, and no clear answer to: “What is this studio actually known for?”

It’s pricing that doesn’t match the market or discounting so aggressively that no one ever wants to pay full price.

It’s opening a second location before the first one has actually figured out retention, operations and profitability.

It’s constantly chasing whatever workout is trending instead of building a brand people would miss if it disappeared.

It’s treating the front desk like an afterthought when they’re often the first and last interaction a client has with your brand.

And sometimes…it IS the workout. 😂

The studios that last aren’t necessarily the ones with the coolest concept. They’re the ones that understand the workout is only one piece of the business.
