HERE’S THE TRUTH ABOUT SOME STUDIOS THEY DONT WANT YOU TO KNOW…
1. Your ‘sold out’ class isn’t always actually full. Waitlists create urgency on purpose, it makes a class look impossible to book even when real attendance is lower than it seems.
2. Cancelling is never as easy as signing up, and that’s not an accident. Notice windows, in-person visit requirements, and buried cancel buttons are retention tools dressed up as policy.
3. Your favorite instructor might be the easiest one for them to replace. Studios often want members loyal to the brand, not to one person, because an instructor with a big following becomes a flight risk if they ever leave.
4. A packed class doesn’t always mean it’s the best one, sometimes it just means the time slot is popular. Don’t be afraid to try the ‘quiet’ class time!
5. Referral and ambassador programs are frequently used to quietly track which members have social influence, and those members can get preferential treatment (free classes, invites, early access) that has nothing to do with how long they’ve been a member.
6. Private equity and franchise rollups are increasingly buying up “boutique” and “independent-feeling” brands, so a studio that markets itself as small and personal may actually be owned by the same group as a dozen others, with corporate-set pricing and quotas the local staff don’t control.
7. Real estate is often the real risk, not the workouts: many boutique studios succeed or fail based on their lease terms and location deal, not their programming, which is why a “great” studio can quietly close even with loyal members, and a mediocre one can survive just because of a cheap lease.
