The UK Dropped Digital ID... Did It Really?

The headlines say the UK has dropped its Digital ID plans.

But did it really?

As a marketer, one thing I’ve learned is this. Never focus on the branding.

Focus on the product. Because sometimes the product stays exactly the same, it just gets a new name.

From what I can see, the idea of a single government-issued Digital ID may have been dropped, but digital identity itself is still moving forward.

Think about how many services already rely on proving who you are digitally.

Government logins. Digital driving licences. Digital passports. Bank identity checks. Age verification for online services. Facial recognition. Biometric authentication.

Individually, each one sounds convenient. But together, they create a digital identity ecosystem.

Countries like Estonia and Singapore already use digital identity extensively, and several European countries have also adopted national digital identity systems.

So maybe the real question isn’t... Will there be a Digital ID?

Maybe it’s...

**Who will provide it? **Will it be government? Banks? Technology companies? Or a combination of all three?

If identity is spread across the organisations you already use every day, then from the user’s perspective you’re still building a digital identity, just not necessarily through one card or one app.

I’m not saying that’s good or bad. I’m saying it’s worth looking beyond the headline. Because the biggest changes often don’t happen when a new product is launched.

They happen when the same product is introduced under a different brand.

What do you think? Has the UK really moved away from Digital ID, or is it simply taking a different route?
