❗️Toyota may have just given enthusiasts the clearest sign yet that the legendary MR2 is preparing for a comeback.

A bizarre matte-black Toyota prototype was recently filmed testing at Fuji Speedway, wearing heavily modified GR Yaris bodywork, enormous cooling openings, oversized side intakes and a huge rear wing.

The vehicle is an engineering mule rather than the finished production car, allowing Toyota to evaluate its mid-engine packaging, cooling, chassis and drivetrain before creating the final body.

Toyota has already confirmed that its GR Yaris M development program relocates the engine and transmission behind the driver, with the competition version using the company’s compact G20E turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder.

Earlier prototypes have also used Toyota’s turbocharged 1.6-liter three-cylinder, while the deeper exhaust note from this latest car has fueled speculation that it may now carry the larger 2.0-liter engine.

The development cars reportedly combine a mid-engine layout with all-wheel drive, giving the potential MR2 successor a considerably more serious performance brief than its lightweight predecessors.

Toyota has confirmed that a production mid-engine sports car is being developed, but the MR2 name, final styling and specifications remain unofficial, and the finished model could still be four or five years away.

Would you rather see the next MR2 remain lightweight and affordable, or become a high-powered AWD rival to much more expensive sports cars?

What are your thoughts? 🤔💭
