The 2016 Spanish Grand Prix produced one of the most explosive teammate collisions in Formula 1 history when Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg wiped each other out on Lap 1.

While fans and analysts argued over who was to blame, late Mercedes non-executive chairman and three-time World Champion Niki Lauda brought his signature, zero-filter honesty to the debrief. 

Lauda noted that Rosberg’s car was visibly derating in the wrong engine mode—flashing its rear light and missing roughly 150 horsepower—making Hamilton’s dive down the closing inside gap on the grass entirely unnecessary.

In classic Niki fashion, he bluntly confronted Lewis about why he didn’t simply sweep past on the open outside line, a moment of brutal candor that paved the way for 18-year-old Max Verstappen’s historic debut win with Red Bull.
