Things I actually say to my babies when they cry.

My mom is a therapist and psychoanalyst. She has believed my entire life, and raised me believing, that memories and associations begin in utero. That the way we are spoken to from the very beginning shapes how we learn to understand ourselves.

So I learned early that you don’t wait until they have words to start giving them language.

You start now. In the crying. In the gas bubble and the overstimulation and the feeling that is too big for a body this small. You name it out loud before they can, so that one day when they feel overwhelmed or exhausted or frustrated, some part of them already knows this feeling has a name. It’s been seen before. And someone stayed.

That’s what these are. The language I was taught to give them from the very first day.

Naming the feeling is the whole thing. 🤍
