The (Diné) people celebrate a beautiful cultural milestone called the First Laugh Ceremony (Ałchíní Baa Dlohhózda), which officially welcomes a newborn into the community. In Navajo tradition, a baby is considered to belong to the spirit world until they express their first genuine giggle, which typically occurs around three months of age. That initial chuckle symbolizes the child’s soul choosing the physical world and their human family over the spiritual realm, making it a highly anticipated and watched-for moment.

The person who successfully elicits the baby’s first laugh is bestowed with a special honor and holds the responsibility of hosting the child’s celebration. At the party, the infant is held over a traditional basket filled with rock salt and helps hand out small gifts to the guests, teaching the baby the sacred Diné virtue of generosity from the very start of their life.

I'II provide a detailed explanation.
When a child is born,
TRADITIONAL belief is that child is still among the Holy People (Diyin Diné) until their first laugh. The child laughter signifies the child's declaration that they will remain among their relatives who walk upon the earth. The laughter of a NAVAJO child is culturally viewed as the child's expression of their
sovereignty as a living being and the choice THEY have made to remain among their people.

There are also specific teachings around the soft bones of a baby's skull and their connection to the Holy People. Traditional Navajo also have teachings around the cradle boards we use for our infants. I won't go into detail about either of those 2 topics because it's not easy to explain their significance and their value in TRADITIONAL culture. Long story short traditional. I practice my traditional teachings and I recently became a grandmother for the 1st time. My gift to my grandson was a cradle boards.
