Kyle Juszczyk has to be thinking about that quote a little differently these days. Back in 2024, the longtime San Francisco 49ers fullback joked that he’s a fullback when it comes to contract negotiations, which hurts, but then he’s a tight end on game day. It was a funny way of pointing out one of the biggest realities of his NFL career. Even though Juszczyk spent years doing more than a traditional fullback, lining up at fullback, tight end, H-back, slot receiver, and even out wide while serving as one of NFL Head Coach Kyle Shanahan’s most versatile offensive weapons, the business side of football always views his position differently.

After being drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the 2013 NFL Draft, Juszczyk developed into NFL’s premier fullback before signing with the SF 49ers in 2017. Since arriving in San Fran, he’s been a key part of NFL offenses featuring quarterback Brock Purdy, QB Jimmy Garoppolo, running back Christian McCaffrey, tight end George Kittle, wide receiver Deebo Samuel, WR Brandon Aiyuk, offensive lineman Trent Williams, RB Raheem Mostert, Elijah Mitchell, and other football players, earning multiple NFL Pro Bowl selections and helping the 9ers reach multiple NFC Championship Games and two Super Bowls against Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and the Kansas City Chiefs. Then came the business side of the National Football League. The San Francisco 49ers released Juszczyk before bringing him back on a smaller contract, making that old quote feel more real than it did when he first said it. Safe for NFL fans, San Francisco 49er fans, and football fans to say that contract negotiations aren’t his favorite part of playing football in the NFL.
