In a landmark deal, American healthcare giant Johnson & Johnson has agreed to pay $5.5bn over allegations that its baby ⁠powder and other talc products caused ⁠ovarian cancer.⁣

According to the company, the settlement covers about 76,000 claims involved in a decade-long court battle. Despite the deal, Johnson & Johnson’s vice-president ​of litigation, Erik Haas, has described the claims as “meritless”, insisting that the company ‌was willing to settle in order to get ‌closure.⁣
⁣
For the deal to be finalized, it must be accepted by 95% of the ovarian cancer claimants in state or federal courts.⁣
