been using these on client sets and for BTS stuff for a while now. all five record to SD or micro SD which for me is honestly the whole thing. no tapes, no digitizing, no hassle. #handycam 

sony cybershot DSC-TX1💫
this is the one i use the most out of the entire bunch. it’s tiny, almost like a credit card but a little bit thicker, and it’s got a carl zeiss lens with optical steady shot. i usually keep it in 1280x720 fine and sometimes shoot 4:3. opening it is so satisfying. only quirk is the memory stick pro duo, but you just grab an adapter and stick a cheap micro sd inside. if you were to get one out of the entire bunch, i’d say get this one.

canon iVIS mini X🔊
this one’s called a different name depending where in the world you are, so you might know it as the legria mini x. the screen flips forward or backward so you can actually see yourself while you’re framing, which makes vlogging super easy. the base lens is that wide fisheye look, around 15 or 16mm, and one button crops you into about a 35mm equivalent. i like the wide mode. it’s got a little flip out stand, takes normal canon batteries, regular sd card. i love this camera.

sony handycam SC7🪽
the chunky monster of the group. it’s a CCD and it shoots on tape, but i don’t actually run tape in it. i’ve got an immersion rc power plate hooked up so it records straight to micro sd instead. there’s a bunch of videos on youtube showing how to do this. but the real reason i use this camera is this lever. it physically swaps between a 4mm and a 12mm lens, so you can go wide to tight in camera. i’ve used it in a client campaign and a reel just for that transition. it’s a lot of fun.

nikon coolpix AW110🍊 
this one was built for people who travel and beat up their gear. weather sealed, GPS built in, and it powers on really quickly which means you’re not missing moments. there’s a zoom lever right on the front, it records 1080p, and photos are jpeg only. it’s the biggest of the small ones but it’s the one i think about the least when i throw it in a bag.
