#SharksonRED with Juan Oliphant (juansharks)

Her name is Luan, she was there in 2024 when I spread both of my parents' ashes at sea, and every year around the same time, I seem to have the privilege of seeing her again. Whether it's a coincidence or something more, each encounter reminds me why the ocean will always feel like home.

Growing up in Hawaiʻi, I came to appreciate the Hawaiian belief in ʻaumākua, family ancestors or spiritual guardians that can take the form of animals, including sharks. Every time I see Luana, I feel a deeper connection to my parents and to the ocean they loved so much.

This moment shows Luana's calm curiosity as she gently investigates Ocean Ramsey (oceanramsey). She's not approaching aggressively. She's simply behaving the way intelligent, confident sharks often do. It's a beautiful reminder of how different reality is from the myths so many people grow up believing.

I hope moments like these help shift people's perception of sharks from fear to respect. When people understand them, they're much more likely to care about protecting them, and that's how real conservation begins.
