happy birthday, lance mcclain.

you are so, so incredibly loved. we like reminding you, because you were cruelly told that the only reason you were there was that somebody better flunked out.

we know that hurt you. a lot of us recognized that feeling as we were watching the show. it’s why you mattered to so many of us so fast.

but that wasn’t the truth. a seat opened up, and out of everyone, they moved YOU into it. everything after that was yours.

you are good, and not just “good for comic relief”. you’re the loudest kid on the team and the calmest when it matters most. people called you the least perceptive right up until you proved, again, that you always knew when someone needed you. 

you learned that somewhere.

on earth, there was a big, warm cuban home -- YOUR home -- full of people who loved you. even in the middle of a war, you talked about your mama’s cooking and the beach you grew up next to. going from the beautiful sounds of a large family to space’s silence must have been so hard, and you did it to save the universe.

the love you gave everyone so they’d feel less alone wasn’t some change–of–heart. you learned it at home, and when you were cut off from everything you knew, you did the only logical thing: you looked at six lonely people and built another one.

you supported hunk through his worst anxiety and let him support you. you told keith the black lion chose right, back when he was sure it hadn’t. you made sure allura knew she wasn’t alone after everything done to isolate her. you loved playing video games with pidge and was an honorary big brother. you matched coran’s energy so the ship never got too quiet. you gave shiro someone to be proud of, and he was so, so incredibly proud.

none of that was something anyone HAD to do, but someone on that ship made sure home traveled with them.

it was you.

if the flirting is all anybody ever saw, they missed you completely. anybody still celebrating you ten years later stayed long enough to see the rest.

this is our thank you, lance. voltron was as strong as it was because of every little thing that made you you.

happy birthday, animated character and all. you deserve it.
