🐅 Happy #InternationalTigerDay 🐅

Today, we're celebrating Mazy, the remarkable 19-year-old Amur tiger in our care and an incredible ambassador for one of the world's most iconic endangered species. While Mazy inspires millions of members and guests each year, she also reminds us why protecting wildlife and wild spaces has never been more important.

Are you aware? Amur tigers are the largest cats on Earth, yet only an estimated 700-750 remain in the wild, primarily in the Russian Far East and northeastern China. Once reduced to just a few dozen animals, dedicated conservation efforts have helped the population recover, but habitat loss, poaching, and human-wildlife conflict continue to threaten their future.

For decades, your Toronto Zoo has proudly played an important role in the global conservation of tigers through accredited breeding programs, expert wildlife care, conservation education, and support for international species management. Our participation in the AZA Species Survival Plan (SSP) has helped maintain a healthy, genetically diverse population of Amur tigers in human care, ensuring these incredible animals continue to inspire future generations while supporting the long-term survival of the species.
