Trump made a joke about Nicki Minaj at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. The internet immediately recognized it as a recycled racist Vietnam War-era joke. And Nicki’s response said everything without saying much at all.

The punchline: hearing gunshots caused Nicki Minaj to start twerking because “she’s the only one who really understood what that meant.”

Researchers traced nearly identical versions of the joke to a decades-old racist trope about Black soldiers in Vietnam dying because they responded to “get down” by dancing instead of taking cover.

Nicki posted a disapproving Chucky doll on X. Her pinned post remains a photo of herself with Trump in the Oval Office.
Elon Musk responded with a laughing emoji.

This is the part the community keeps trying to explain: alignment is not protection. And a photo op in the Oval Office does not change what someone thinks of you behind closed doors.
